Floods, Flooding & Floodplains
Floods are the most common of all hazards
in the City of Indianapolis and throughout the U.S. Flood effects can be local,
impacting a neighborhood or community, or very large, affecting entire river
basins and multiple states. All floods are not alike. Some floods develop
slowly, sometimes over a period of days. But flash floods can develop quickly,
sometimes in just a few minutes.
To protect the citizens of Marion County
and reduce flood-related losses, the City of Indianapolis participates in the
Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA)
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The City has been a member in the NFIP
since 1984. Through the NFIP, the City implements wise floodplain management
practices and property owners are able to insure against flood losses.
