City of Indianapolis GIS To Provide Online Availability of Oblique County Images

Residents Can View Images Used For Assessment and GIS Applications

March 3, 2005 -- The City of Indianapolis today announced the availability of its Pictometry imagery database to citizens of Marion County. Citizens of Marion County can view digital images of their area through a web browser found on the IMAGIS website.  IMAGIS (Indianapolis Mapping and Geographic Infrastructure System) provides city agencies with GIS data for assessing, public safety, and other agencies.  The web-base service, called Pictometry On-Line, is offered through the imaging company, Pictometry International.

Traditionally used in government and private industry applications such as first responders, law enforcement, planning agencies, appraisers, and engineering firms, Pictometry captures up to 12 different views of every square foot in an area.  The imaging system enables municipalities to save revenues and improve services to the public through the use of the imaging data and software. The company’s patented image capture process and software system is successfully deployed in many large metropolitan and rural areas throughout the United States.

Pictometry On-Line is a fee-based service of the company that enables private businesses to have access to Pictometry images without watermarks that obscure portions of the image for copyright protection. Marion County residents can view watermarked digital images of their area free of charge. If residents wish to purchase an image, they can do so directly through the Pictometry Online viewer. A portion of the proceeds will go towards the renewal program for the imaging system.

Residents of Marion County can register to view the Marion County images through a link on the IMAGIS website, http://images.pictometry.com/Glass/Promotions/demoacct_indy/index.php .  They will be instructed to enter an e-mail address to freely browse the watermarked images of Marion County.  For businesses such as real estate, engineering, and architectural firms, the ability to view the images without watermarks is available as a fee-based service.  This service also enables firms to view areas outside of Marion County as well.  A premium service is also available through the Pictometry, which provides basic measuring capabilities such as distance, height, and area, using the web browser for pre-inspection work and other applications.
